Barnacle Goose Amd Yet Another Missed Yellow-browed Warbler

Milbury Lane, Exminster, Devon
I had a very quick look for yesterday’s Yellow-browed Warbler before work around Milbury Lane with no luck. I really think I’m not destined to connect with this species this year. The only birds of note was a fly through Female Eurasian Sparrowhawk and large numbers of Redwing and a few Fieldfare flying overhead.

A quick look from the middle car park after work gave up the 4 Barnacle Goose in amongst a large flock of Canada Goose. Also good numbers of Northern Lapwing about. Light was fading fast, so no time to look for anything else.

Giving The Pallid Harrier Another Chance

Blackhills Quarry, Exmouth, Devon
After reading on Devon Birds that the Pallid Harrier had been seen in the area, I thought I would look in to it. I checked out the Facebook page mentioned but have to admit I was dubious as to whether the ID was correct. However I decided to give it the benefit of the doubt and thought it worthy of checking out. I checked out the area around the pond for around 45 minutes this morning before work. The first bird I noted was a Common Sandpiper that was quickly followed by a Northern Wheatear. There were good number of Meadow Pipit (potential Harrier food), On the pond were 3 Little Grebe and a single female Tufted Duck. No sign of the reported Pallid Harrier but I did have an unusual sighting with a flyover White-bellied Dipper!

I gave it another go for an hour after work I saw more Meadow Pipit, the Tufted Duck count went up to 4 birds and Canada Goose were added to the Wildfowl species. Several Common Moorhen were feeding in amongst a group of European Herring Gull and a Great Cormorant that were resting on the shore. A few mobile Common Linnet were around as were a party of European Stonechat. The best bird however was a rather pale looking bird that was rather distant that I believe was a young Whinchat but my photo doesn’t do it justice. Again no sign of a Pallid Harrier.

Egyptian Goose..... Oh And A Spotted Crake

Otter Estuary, Budleigh Salterton, Devon
I took an after work walk from the Cricket pitch up to the viewing platform south of the white bridge. En route were 4 Common Ringed Plover and 4 Dunlin in the first channel by the picnic benches. At the hide an Egyptian Goose, drifted passed north with 2 Greylag Goose and what seemed like a few hundred Canada Goose. I walked up to the last viewing platform that’s just south of the white bridge in the hope of a better look at the Egyptian Goose. My hunch was right as it was sat on what remained of the mud on the opposite side of the Estuary. I watched for a few moments and decided to scan the area, just to the right of the Goose was the Spotted Crake. Giving off better views than the other day. Still a tad distant for a good photo though.

Spoonbill But No Goose

Exminster Marsh, Exminster, Devon
I had two visits today before and after work. I was hoping to see the Greater White-fronted Goose. Plenty of Canada Goose on show but I had no joy with the target Goose. The Eurasian Spoonbill was on view in the centre of the marsh on both visits but I couldn’t get a decent picture. A few Northern Pintail and Gadwall were the only note worthy birds.

American Wigeon Again!

Matford Pools, Exeter, Devon
After work I decided to take another look at the American Wigeon. This time around it was showing nicely on the left of the first pool. Also of note were a Stock Dove, several Common Snipe, a few Northern Lapwing, a few Eurasian Curlew and Lesser Black-backed Gull.

Another Crealy Adventure

Crealy great adventure park, Devon
Our weekly visit to Crealy to get the kids to burn off some energy. Whilst they were playing, I managed to get away for a walk around the pond. I always pray that it will produce an unusual Gull or Wildfowl species. No such luck today but couldn't resist a few iPhone pictures of some of the residents.
